Teeth Cleaning
Professional Care to Prevent Oral Problems
Even taking regular care of your teeth, by brushing and flossing, is not enough to prevent the accumulation of calculus, or tartar. A professional dental cleaning removes tartar accumulation in areas that you cannot reach, such as around the back teeth and under the gum line.
The hygienists at Centre Dentaire Pierrefonds have many years of experience and are highly qualified to prevent and treat oral diseases. They are meticulous and attentive to provide you with a pleasant and gentle teeth-cleaning experience during your routine dental check-up.
At the end of your appointment, your hygienist will discuss their findings with your dentist to develop a personalized care plan and schedule regular visits. Some patients may require several professional cleanings per year.

The Different Stages of an Effective Dental Cleaning
1. Oral examination
Using a small mirror, this examination checks for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems before proceeding with the cleaning.
2. Tooth scaling
Plaque and hardened tartar are removed from around the gum line and between the teeth, using specialized tools.
3. Tooth polishing
A powerful brush and special abrasive paste are used to polish teeth and remove stains and plaque residues.
4. Flossing
A dental floss is passed between your teeth to remove trapped debris and check the sensitivity of your gums.
5. Mouth rinse
A fluoride or antiseptic rinse removes remaining particles and bacteria.
6. Fluoride treatment
Optional – A fluoride gel, foam, or varnish is applied to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities.
7. Final examination
This step ensures that all teeth have been thoroughly cleaned.
8. Recommendations
Daily hygiene tips and recommendations are given based on your teeth and oral condition.
9. X-rays
X-rays of your teeth are taken (if necessary) to detect root problems.

Problems Detected During a Professional Teeth Cleaning
During your dental cleaning, it’s possible to detect certain dental conditions that require attention. These include:
- Cavities
- Gum disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis
- Dental fillings in poor condition
- Enamel wear due to bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Other oral complications such as early detection of precancerous lesions.
