Dental X-Rays
Revealing Your Internal Oral Health
Dental X-rays are images that allow a more detailed examination of the internal structure of your mouth, including your teeth, the roots of your teeth and the bone structure surrounding your teeth. At Centre Dentaire Pierrefonds, we have several types of X-ray equipment, each providing us with unique information about your oral and dental health.
What are Dental X-Rays Used For?
X-rays are used as part of our clinic’s examination protocol to help us identify oral health problems that are not visible to the naked eye, such as:
- Decay that has not yet reached the surface of the tooth
- An abscess at the root of your tooth
- Cysts and tumours
- Jawbone issues
- Absence of permanent teeth in a child
- Development of impacted wisdom teeth
The X-rays we take are also useful for detecting changes in your mouth and teeth over time.

Are Dental X-Rays Always Necessary?
Dental X-rays are not always necessary. It really depends on your age, your dental condition, your history of cavities or gum disease and the presence of specific symptoms.
If you are a new patient to our clinic, we will recommend x-rays at your first dental appointment to get a better picture of your oral condition. If you have recent X-rays from another clinic, we can review them to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure.
Are X-Rays Dangerous?
Our clinic utilizes new technologies in digital imaging that allow us to perform X-rays with much less radiation exposure than in the past. In addition, we will always cover you in a lead blanket to block X-rays from penetrating other parts of your body. Radiation from dental X-rays is as minimal as that received from sun exposure, appliances in your home, and while riding on a plane.
Can dental X-rays be taken during pregnancy?
Although it is possible to take dental X-rays while pregnant, if you take the necessary precautions, we recommend that our patients postpone taking dental X-rays until after their pregnancy if the case is not urgent. It’s important that you let us know if you’re pregnant, so we can discuss the risks with you.
